Hiya! Thank you for visiting. My name is Larni, I’m the face behind “Neon Pink Squid Ink”.
I have always had a strong interest in all things creative, especially drawing. When I was a little girl, I told my parents repeatedly “when I grow up, I’m going to be a cartoonist!” so illustration has been a lifelong passion of mine. I'm inspired mainly by fashion illustration, game art and art nouveau, particularly Alphonse Mucha.
I studied art, graphic design and photography in college, before completing a Foundation Art Degree at Treforest, and later a degree in Graphic Communications at the University of South Wales.
I came up with “Neon Pink Squid Ink” as a sort of artist's stage name for my work. It reflects my eccentric art style and concepts, and my favourite colour happens to be pink. I describe my art style as “whimsical, sparkly and slightly twisted“ for the same reason.
I primarily work in procreate, because I love the vast amount of freedom it gives me in terms of colour, texture, and the ability to customise brushes. I use procreate for all of my Illustration work, whether it be to complete my commissions, create line art work in preparation to screen print my one of a kind fashion tote bags, or just to draw for fun! I think it lends itself well to my personal art style, but I also love to use traditional art mediums.
My go-to traditional materials are gouache and coloured pencils, combined with art markers. My favourites currently are Promarkers, POSCA markers, and Faber Castell Coloured pencils. I use a light box to help with tracing my traditional artworks from the rough sketch stage, to refined line art before the colouring process.
I have always been a huge fan of fashion illustration and Art Nouveau, in particular Alphonse Mucha. I also have a keen interest in makeup art, pop art and all things eccentric, and sometimes dark. I think visual metaphors always make for cool concepts, and I usually spend some time making spider diagrams, and using word association to come up with an intelligent idea, before starting on the details and aesthetics.
I generally combine dark or weird elements with bright colours, a fashion illustration pose and art nouveau style lineart, which I think makes my work stand out as a unique style that reflects my own personal point of view as an independent artist.
